Choosing an LED display involves more than selecting a screen size. Pixel pitch, image quality, surface protection and maintenance requirements all influence how well a display will perform in its intended environment.
COB LED technology is one approach to building fine-pitch displays. Understanding what it changes—and what still depends on the complete display design—helps project teams make better-informed decisions.
What Does COB Mean in LED Displays?
COB stands for Chip-on-Board. In a COB LED display, bare LED chips are mounted directly onto a circuit-board substrate rather than first being enclosed in individual surface-mounted LED packages. A protective encapsulation layer covers the emitting surface.
This construction supports closely spaced pixels and can provide additional protection for the LED chips. In this article, COB refers to direct-view LED displays, where the LEDs themselves form the visible image.

No. The terms describe different aspects of the technology.
COB describes the packaging approach: mounting bare LED chips directly onto a substrate.
Flip-chip describes the electrical connection method: connecting a chip through contacts on its underside rather than using conventional wire bonds.
A display can therefore use both COB packaging and flip-chip interconnections. However, the term “COB” alone does not establish that a product uses flip-chip technology.
What Are the Benefits of COB LED Displays?
Pixel pitch is the distance between the centres of adjacent pixels. A smaller pitch places more pixels within the same physical screen area, helping reproduce fine text, graphics and detailed images.
COB construction supports fine-pitch designs, making it relevant to projects where viewers stand or sit relatively close to the display. The appropriate pitch still depends on screen dimensions, content and viewing distance.

Encapsulation can help protect the LED chips from everyday contact and environmental exposure. However, protection levels are product-specific.
An IP rating may apply only to the module surface, not to the complete display, rear connections or installed system. COB should therefore not be treated as a universal guarantee of waterproofing or outdoor suitability.
Different surface finishes
COB products are available with different surface treatments, including matte and glossy finishes. These affect how the screen interacts with ambient light.
When evaluating a display, inspect reflections, black appearance and readability under the lighting conditions expected at the installation site. Do not assume that every COB display has the same anti-glare characteristics.
COB vs SMD vs GOB: What Is the Difference?
These terms are often compared, but they do not all describe the same manufacturing step.
01 SMD: individual LED packages. 02 GOB: protective coating, typically over an SMD module. 03 COB: bare LED chips mounted directly on the board. Structures are shown schematically.| Technology | What it means | Key difference |
|---|
| SMD — Surface-Mounted Device | Packaged LED components are mounted onto a circuit board. | Uses individual LED packages. |
|---|
| GOB — Glue-on-Board | A protective coating is applied over an LED module, commonly an SMD module. | Adds surface protection to an existing LED arrangement. |
|---|
| COB — Chip-on-Board | Bare LED chips are mounted directly onto the substrate and encapsulated. | Changes the underlying LED packaging approach. |
|---|
GOB is therefore not another name for COB. Both can provide a protected surface, but their underlying construction differs. No single label determines which display is best for every project.
Is COB always better than SMD?
No. COB and SMD use different packaging approaches. Compare complete products against the project’s image-quality requirements, operating conditions, maintenance plan and budget.
Is every COB LED display waterproof?
No. Check the specific product’s protection rating and its scope. A protected front surface does not automatically mean that the entire installation is waterproof.
Does COB automatically mean 4K resolution?
No. Resolution depends on the number of pixels across the display, not the packaging technology. For example, a display with a 4.8 × 2.7 metre active area and a 1.25 mm native pixel pitch would contain 3,840 × 2,160 pixels. This is a calculation example, not a specification for a particular product.
